Self-Defense Tips for Deaf Individuals
Introduction I have been wearing cochlear implants since 2013. They are amazing and a vast improvement over hearing aids. But they are not the be-all and end-all. I often can’t hear people coming up behind me, and when I’m walking, I often don’t hear cars…

The Different Cobra Kai Dojos

“It’s a Pain in the Ass.”
How many of you have described a task as “a pain in the ass?” When confronted with an unwanted task, people often approach it in one of two ways: Disclosure: I have been guilty of buying into the above excuses. It’s human nature. But what…
Look in the Mirror. You Are Your Own Worst Enemy
“You are your own worst enemy” is a lesson I learned in the 8th grade. While in the 8th grade (1978), I played for the U.L. Light Junior High School football team in Barberton, Ohio, a town of 28,000. Our rival, Highland Junior High School,…

Macro Awareness for Self Protection
Intro Many martial arts school owners stress the importance of “awareness” to their students. Often, they refer to situational or environmental awareness. One example of “environmental awareness” is the presence of broken or non-functioning lights in a parking lot. We all prefer well-lit areas. I…
A Freaking Blast at the Michigan Camp
I attended the annual Michigan Camp in Monroe, Michigan this past weekend. To say that I had a blast is an understatement. I had not seen many of my friends since the 2019 Arnisfest in Chicago. The US-Canada border was closed from March 2020 until…

Making the Connections
I have encountered martial artists who like to focus on the differences between martial arts. This focus is often done to prove their art’s superiority over others. Unfortunately, this thought process is detrimental to their martial progress. If you are not able to view this video, click…
Hunting for Disarm #2

Where’s Disarm #1?
Learning stick disarms is an essential part of training in Filipino martial arts. In Modern Arnis, there is one basic disarm per angle. One can then apply this to any angle. The current progression that I teach is: Repeating the same basic 12 stick disarms…
The Age of Open Source Information
In the old days, martial arts grandmasters taught only certain “secrets” of their art to their most trusted students. In other words, one trained for years to gain entry into the “inner circle” of trusted students. And only then would you learn the “deadly secrets”…
The Geezer Phase of Being A Martial Artist
Last Friday, I had back-to-back private lessons with a pair of brothers. As always, I was active with them, pushing them hard and expanding their martial horizons. I had a lot of fun with them. However, the aftermath was brutal. My right hip became quite…
Martial Arts Training Seasons

Lock Me Up!

The Coming Winter
Uncertainty No one can predict with any certainty what may happen this coming winter. I think that one can safely say that, as far as Canada is concerned, there will probably not be another COVID-19 wave due to the high vaccination rates. On the other…

Rust and WD-40!
So, private lessons have slowly ramped up in the last couple of weeks. None of my clients have trained in 6 months. One said, “I haven’t picked up my stick since December.” From the get-go, their rustiness has been apparent. As a result, I have…
Knowledge Creation, the Internet and Martial Arts
The fact that accumulated knowledge, over time, tends to grow exponentially is accepted. For many of us, this fact is obvious. However, we need to look no further at the exponential growth rate of technology in the last 20 years. The smartphone of 2008 pales…
Sputtering to Life
My hopes of ramping up my private lesson teaching schedule from 0 to 60mph ran into reality last week. In a way, this mirrors the North American and European economies. Both are sputtering back to life after a year of COVID-related lockdowns. Rebooting economies isn’t…
Back in Action!

Ontario announced today that they would start re-opening the economy on Friday, June 11th. Based on my reading of the provincial guidelines, I can teach private lessons. IT’S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG! LET’S GO! Because the province is beginning to distribute 2nd doses, last fall’s…
Inching Toward Normal Life?

The Light At the End Of The Tunnel?

Friday Recommendation #9
How many of you have run into martial artists who acted as though they knew it all? The hell with them, right? While that may be a justifiable reaction, many of us have gone through a period where we knew it all. This terrific podcast…
The Absurd Ban on Outdoor Recreational Activities
One of the absurdities of the current “stay at home” order in Ontario is a ban on outdoor recreational activities. This flies in the face of the current COVID-19 science. The risk of being infected with COVID-19 is much lower outdoors than indoors. Ontario’s medical…
Pandemic Solo Training
Pandemic Solo Training? Hell, yes, it can be done! While it is true that FMAs are geared toward partner training, there are also tons of solo training possibilities during this pandemic. Forms and stick shadowboxing (carenza) come to mind. However, I have more than those…
Friday Recommendation #8
If you are not able to watch this video, click here. This is a nice complement/counterpart to my blog post earlier this week. What do you think when you hear “McDojo?” Most of us consider this to mean martial arts schools that are unworthy by…
Just Do Your Freaking Thing
I’ve been pondering the importance of ignoring what Professor Presas once called “the barking dogs.” He often said, “Ignore the barking dogs and do your thing.” There are many naysayers out there who espouse absolutism. They fail to recognize what is true for themselves, and…
Friday Recommendation #7 – Maija Soderholm Interview
This is a fantastic interview between Dean France and Maija Soderholm. If you are not able to view this video, click here. I am usually reluctant to recommend lengthy podcasts. Between family and work, most readers won’t have time to digest a 2-hour podcast. I…

FMA Translations
One of the keys to mastery of FMAs is knowing how to translate a movement across different platforms. A good example of this is “gunting.” This is a scissors-like movement, characterized by the left hand parrying an attack while the right hand defangs or cuts…
YouTube, Zoom, and Cross-Training
Intro The martial arts industry has been upended as we have gone through this pandemic. Several martial arts schools in the vicinity of where I live have closed. One school was in its location for 30 years only to be brought down by the pandemic…
Friday Recommendation #5
If you are not able to view this video, click here. Sensei Jesse Enkamp and MMA Coach Ramsey Dewey pack quite a bit into this 10-minute discussion. The exchange between the two veers away from the video’s title. For this post, I’d like to focus…
Killer Left Hand Abanico Techniques
One of the tenets of Modern Arnis is practicing with both the right and left hand. While I am right-hand dominant, I have fun playing with my left hand. I believe it is vital for overall martial development to practice both sides. However, there is…

Closed Captioning on Zoom! Yeah, Baby!
As some of you know, I’ve been teaching Modern Arnis/Filipino Martial Arts classes and private lessons on Zoom for the past year or so. I’ll be the first to admit that it does not replace live teaching in any way, shape, or form. That said,…
Friday Recommendation #2
In December, I came across this podcast by Iain Abernethy, in which he discusses the differences between martial arts, fighting, and self-protection. He posits that losing the distinction among the three leads martial arts instructors astray. If you are not able to view this video,…
There Are No Fucking Secrets!
Recently, I read through a martial arts forum where a discussion on secret techniques was taking place. I did not join in the discussion as I was busy with errands. Also, I did not want to go down the rabbit hole with those convinced of…

Low High Palis Palis
The “Amazing Palis Palis Drill” post showcased a simple drill against angles 1 and 2. We will explore the low high version of this drill. Before we go any further, the basic premise of any flow drill is: don’t get hit. Now, there are several…
Am I Crazy for Writing A Book?
Yes, you read that right! I am writing an e-book on martial arts training tips and FMA concepts. At some point, it will be self-published and sold through Gumroad. How did I decide to do this? Before the pandemic, I was teaching Modern Arnis classes…
Amazing Palis Palis Drill!
Let’s face it. Drills are a heck of a lot of fun! In my opinion, flow drills are a step up from the one-step method. Don’t get me wrong, the one-step method is a great way to learn the building blocks of a martial art….
Keep It Simple Stupid!
During a lesson with Caiden, I pontificated on the importance of “K.I.S.S.” I explained to him that was shorthand for “Keep it simple, stupid!” The kid laughed, thinking that was the greatest quote he had ever heard. For the duration of the lesson, he repeated…
How to do the Redonda Training Drill
For those in lockdown situations and looking for solo training ideas, I recommend the Redonda Drill, a mainstay of Filipino Martial Arts. The Redonda drill strengthens the forearms, lays the foundations for multiple applications, and does not require a partner! You can do this on…
Four Reasons Why Filipino Martial Arts Suck
A few years ago, I posted “Three Reasons Why Filipino Martial Arts Suck.” I decided to update this post to include an additional reason and tweaked some sections in the original post. Those uninformed about Filipino Martial Arts often say the following: (1) “All they do…
Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy
The first Karate Kid movie introduced us to Cobra Kai’s “Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy” slogan. While seeming over the top, upon reflection, there is depth to this slogan. Recently, my wife and I binge-watched Season 3 of Cobra Kai. We both loved it…
The Video Game Generation
I’ve known over the years that nearly all of my younger students play video games. Minecraft is one popular game among the video game generation. Among popular games with my younger students (ranging from 8 to 15 years of age) are Super Mario, Fortnite, Street…
What Now?
What now? 2020 has been quite the year. Ontario went on a months-long lockdown from March through the end of August. At that time, the province started to relax COVID-19 restrictions in various regions, based on case numbers. Unfortunately and this was foreseeable, cases started…
Changes in Private Lessons
As previously mentioned, I have transitioned from teaching group classes to private lessons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the last few months, the tenor and format of the private lessons have changed quite a bit compared to the pre-pandemic private lessons. Before the pandemic,…
Forget About Winning or Losing
When folks roll on the mat or do stick free play, why do so many focus on “winning” or “losing?” The fact of the matter is that you’re going to win some and lose some. Instead of getting hung up on who prevailed, just focus…
Old School Garage Testing
As readers of this blog know, I have switched from group classes to private lessons during these unprecedented times. One consequence of this move concerns testing my students for rank. In the past, I have tested my students in a group setting. However, in these…
Martial Arts Zoom Classes
Over the last few months, I’ve been teaching five Zoom classes per week. The attendees consist mostly of students from the 6Tigers Academy and occasionally Bamboo Spirit students. The seeds of my Zoom class experiences are due to a group of siblings, originally from Ottawa…
The Joy of Learning
Over the years, I have observed that those who love learning are often the most enjoyable folks to teach in private lessons. Like many, I have been captivated by Nandi Bushell, a phenomenally talented 10-year-old drummer in the U.K. whose videos have gone viral due…
Killer Concepts!
I recently posted on Facebook that I had updated my “Bamboo Spirit Concepts” list to include two more, expanding the list from 20 to 22. I also reordered the list so that it makes more sense. Surprisingly, the response was robust; many requested a copy of…
COVID-19 Transition
I know that it’s been a while since I posted. I don’t have much in the way of excuses. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I have transitioned from group classes to private lessons in the past couple of months. As we all know, we are…
Attacking Combinations
The story of how I came up with the “Attacking Combinations” video! While I miss teaching classes and private lessons, one of the upsides of the lockdown is that I have had mucho time on my hands to figure out variations of solo workouts. Hence,…

Post Lockdown Thoughts
During these unprecedented times, martial arts instructors have to think about their short term futures, after the lockdowns are gradually eased, and we return to teaching. But, first, what is the definition of “short term future” in the context of these times? For me, the…
Solo Training
Many of us cannot train with our martial arts classmates and friends during these extraordinary times. Since I have confined myself at home, I have done a fair bit of solo training, including, but not limited to, bodyweight and martial exercises, solo stick exercises, Shotokan…
Under Lockdown, Part 2
Earlier this month, I published a post entitled “Under Lockdown.” I have to confess that it was a thought exercise and I honestly did not think we would be in the situation we are in today. Since that post, Ontario has imposed social distancing and…
Tribute To Alan

Under Lockdown
Note: I wrote this on March 2nd, which seems so long ago. A lockdown has been imposed. Still, much of what I wrote below still applies. Well, these are wild times. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’re likely aware of the coronavirus. As…
The Learning Cycle
As many of you know, I like teaching flow drills. I find it a practical and fun way to introduce the concepts of Modern Arnis. I find this a useful addition to a student’s learning cycle. The concepts range from abanico corto, palis palis, disarms,…
Get Out of the Comfort Zone!
Often, martial artists stay in their comfort zone and practice the same form or workout routine daily. They perform their favourite kata the same way several times a week. As a result, some get stuck in a rut. Why not challenge yourself? Why not get…
The Comparison Game
Several years ago, one of my students, who was in his mid 70s, stopped by my class and announced that he had decided to quit. I asked him for a reason, expecting him to cite a health or age-related issue. He surprised me by responding,…
Footwork
While perusing various videos on The Modern Martial Artist YouTube channel, I came across this fascinating video and loved the footwork analysis! If you are not able to view this video, click here. Quick background: Willie Pep is considered, pound for pound, among the top…
Angry and Crazy Driver
A month ago, I had an exciting front-row seat to a near-road rage incident on a residential street. Let me tell you, the two drivers involved were dumber than dirt. This incident involved an angry and crazy driver and a stupid driver. There are lots…
Which Technique Is Best?
I have often been asked, “Which technique is best?” for any given situation. The result of those questions was the above video. The long and short of it is “it depends on the angle of attack coming at you.” But it gets more complicated, as…
Archie Moore’s Crossed Guard
Recently, I came across a fantastic YouTube channel called The Modern Martial Artist. This channel has tons of videos analyzing many boxers and martial artists. The technical breakdowns are often superb. I have found several videos explaining techniques that are amazingly similar to martial arts that…
Talent or Dedication?
Which is more important, dedication or talent? From an instructor’s perspective, dedication wins hands down. Like many instructors, I have students who are talented and “natural.” I also have students who are not “natural” in martial arts. Oddly enough, and generally speaking, the less talented…
Banda y Banda
“Banda y banda” is a term used in Filipino martial arts to describe a side-to-side motion commonly practiced. It is one of the first “traditionals” that the late Professor Remy A. Presas taught his students, along with movements such as figure 8, reverse figure 8,…
Self Permission
While teaching the self-defence classes at the Abilities Centre a couple of weeks ago, I discussed the concepts of setting boundaries, assertiveness, and self-permission. One of the exercises during this particular class involved one person invading their partner’s personal space. The defender had to assert…
Rebooting The Blog

Taking The Leap
Recently, I came across this video on Facebook, and it stood out to me. Take 10 minutes of your time and watch the whole thing. Some saw it as a metaphor for death regarding confronting the fear of the unknown. Some saw it in more…
Modern Arnis Concepts: Stealing The Lead
Stealing the lead is a term often discussed in tapi tapi. It means that one player has reversed the momentum of the other and is driving on the other. In other words, one player has gone from a defensive mode to being on the offensive…
The State of the Filipino Martial Arts Industry
Recently, Kai Morgan published a thought-provoking post on the state of the martial arts industry. It has made me think about the Filipino martial arts industry. Read her article here. In relevant part, the post states: The traditional martial arts are often said to be suffering. Many (although by…
Sinawali Applications
Sinawali practice is an integral part of Filipino Martial Arts. I am amazed to see how little some understand the value of sinawali. Some don’t get beyond the double stick practice of the patterns or the “pattycake” empty-hand version. There is much to be mined…
Teaching Sensitivity
Teaching one-step techniques and flow drills alone is not enough. One-step techniques are a great gateway to teaching more complex techniques, and flow drills serve as an introduction to “the flow.” However, neither, by themselves, sufficiently teaches sensitivity. What do I mean by sensitivity? In…
Counters to Disarms
“How do you do these counters to the disarms?” “It’s easy; you must relax and practice them repeatedly.” During one class, I taught some counters to the #1 disarm taught in Modern Arnis. I taught these counters in the context of some principles I wanted…

Flow Drills vs. Techniques
Over the years I’ve taught Modern Arnis, I have flipped back and forth between teaching the art through techniques and flow drills. Lately, I have begun to emphasize flow drills more. Why? While teaching one-step techniques has its place, there are limitations to this method….
Stop Judging Yourself!
I often see students judge themselves harshly after they have messed up a technique or cannot instantly master a new technique. Their facial expressions often betray their internal thinking process. “God, I’m so stuuuupid!” When this happens, I tell them “stop judging yourself!” If you…
What Are Filipino Martial Arts?
Recently, a prospective student attended a trial class. She had some previous martial arts experience, consisting of karate. I taught her the 12 angles of attack and other Modern Arnis basics. She absorbed the material quickly and enthusiastically. After the class ended, I asked her…
Reaction vs Anticipation
Learning the difference between reaction and anticipation is challenging for a beginner student. In the beginning, students will often anticipate their opponent’s next move, often leading to bad outcomes. Over time, with guidance and experience, they will learn that reading and reacting is a better…

Evolving with the Times
I’ve been considering whether martial arts should evolve with the times or remain in its “pure form.” Let me elaborate. I think of martial arts as a vehicle to defend oneself—Self-defence, in other words. From that perspective, should it not make sense for martial arts…
Incremental Improvement
Often, martial artists or those engaged in athletic endeavours will reach a plateau. In addition, they may find that their rate of improvement dramatically slows down. The tricky question is whether one is willing to put in the work necessary to achieve a 1% or…

Jeet Kune Do Books
In addition to books on Filipino Martial Arts, I have also noticed that Jeet Kune Do books fit in well with an Arnisador’s library. These books offer insights very similar to the underlying concepts of FMAs. I recommend reading Jeet Kune Do books with Filipino…
FMA Books
Anytime I go into a bookstore, I head for the Sports Section, where martial arts books are located. In particular, I look for FMA books. The first thing I look for is books on Filipino Martial Arts. Unfortunately, they are challenging to find and are…

Book Review: “The Straight Lead”

Modern Arnis-What it is and it isn’t
First and foremost, Grandmaster Remy A. Presas designed Modern Arnis as a self-defence system. While Modern Arnis and many Filipino Martial Arts (referred to as FMAs) have origins in bladed weapons usage, Professor Presas preferred not to teach the bladed aspect of the art. Over…
“There Are No Superior Styles, Just Superior Fighters.”
Many in the martial arts community have paraphrased the above quote. At the outset, I would have to say that the quote about martial arts styles is essentially on target. However, a closer examination of this quote reveals a more nuanced understanding of just what…
