“Dun Dun” Comes To Toronto!
Dun dun!
Like many people, I enjoy cop shows. Over the years, my favorites have been NYPD Blue, Homicide: Life on the Street, Murdoch Mysteries, and the various Law and Order shows.
Imagine my delight when I discovered that a Toronto version of Law and Order would debut on February 22, 2024.
If you are not able to view the video, go here.
Heeeeyo!! The famous “dun dun” sound has come to the Great White North!
The series is expected to run for ten episodes as of this post. Five episodes have aired thus far, and I like them. I hope this series sticks around for a while.
Side note 1: my wife and I have been making homemade pizzas on Saturday nights since the beginning of the year. It’s damn easy and fun to make. It’s a hell of a lot cheaper and healthier than take-out pizza. We usually eat our pizza while watching Murdoch Mysteries, Law and Order and Miss Scarlett and The Duke (a British police show set in 1880s London).
Back to Law and Order Toronto: Criminal Intent. This series employs a similar “ripped from the headlines” approach as the original Law and Order series.
At least two episodes bear uncanny resemblances to real-life events in Toronto. I anticipate that more episodes will resemble actual events in the Toronto area.
Episode 2 appeared to be based on a condo mass shooting in 2022. Episode 4 referenced a crack-smoking mayor. Sound familiar?
Vehicle theft has escalated to alarming rates in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), catching the attention of local news outlets and international media. A lengthy article in the New York Times delved deep into this rampant crime, pointing out the factors contributing to the GTA’s status as a hotspot for auto theft. This issue made its way into the series, which tackled the subject in Episode 5, a highly entertaining episode. In typical Law and Order fashion, the episode veered off in a different direction, focusing on a catfishing scheme by the bad guys.
Side Note 2: My Mom, who passed away in August 2017, was a huge fan of Law and Order. Whenever I visited her at the assisted living facility, I always found her with the TV on and watching it. I guess there was a channel that was all Law and Order all the time.
I worked in downtown Toronto for a few years and was delighted to see familiar sights in this new series. As seen below, you will often see a scene with the famous Toronto sign behind the actors.
I worked at two locations under contract, and both were close to this area. If you’re a tourist or in town for an event, this is a great area to check out.
Coming from a legal background and teaching martial arts, I find this series appealing because it combines criminal law with the frailties of human nature. Plus, it’s just plain entertaining!
