Putting Everything On The Line
If you are not able to watch the video, go here.
One of my all-time favourite moments was the amazing, desperate downhill run by Austria’s Franz Klammer. I was 12 at the time and a fan.
Klammer was the reigning World Downhill champion skier and was favored to win the gold medal in this event in the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics.
He was under immense pressure to win the Gold since he was skiing in his home nation. The pressure increased only when he was trailing Swiss rival Bernhard Russi heading into the final run.
The fact that Klammer dominated the World Cup Circuit prior to the Olympics and fell behind Russi only increased the pressure on him.
Furthermore, Klammer was the LAST skier up. Russi seemed to be assured of the gold medal.
Klammer put everything on the line and skied with wild abandon. He threw caution to the wind.
The result is what you see in the video. For me, it remains one of the greatest moments in all of sports history. It is the epitome of putting everything on the line. Determination, desperation, and a burning desire to win all in one moment.
What does this mean for me, and maybe you, the reader?
There are many days, albeit not every day, when I have the same sense of urgency as Franz Klammer on his last run. This is probably the function of my being in my early 60s. No, I don’t have any terminal disease and could live another 25 to 30 years. But knowing that we all have limited time on this rock adds to that urgency.
This applies especially to my martial arts training. I train nearly every day, whether it’s private lessons, teaching classes, solo training, or analyzing videos.
It’s all about my thirst for knowledge, improving my skills, and I love this journey! I feel as if I don’t know anything!
Anyway, there is a sense of urgency in me that is somewhat similar to Franz Klammer during his famous run.
Do any of you feel this way? Let me know in the comments!
