Video of the Week 29: Left Hand Tapi Tapi Block
As mentioned in previous posts, I’ve been dealing with a severe case of tendonitis in my right shoulder. Physiotherapy is helping a lot, but the shoulder isn’t 100% yet. I have no idea how long it will take, but hopefully, it will resolve within a month or two. Anyway, for the past few months, I’ve been doing a lot of left-hand training with my private clients. In the video below, I demonstrate the left-hand tapi tapi block.
This may be tricky or awkward for right-handed people. One tip: if you find it difficult, try doing it with your right hand and then replicate the movement with your left hand.
Practicing a technique multiple times is essential for building muscle memory and enhancing overall proficiency. In other words, multiple repetitions are key. That said, practice the left-hand tapi tapi block repeatedly. It’s the only way you will achieve some proficiency with your left hand.
I’ve seen folks practice the tapi tapi block off the 12 angles once and call it a day.
Wut? You’ll never achieve proficiency that way.
Do ten or more repetitions!
In addition to the left-hand tapi tapi block, I demonstrated the left outside sweep stroke.
This differs from the left inside sweepstroke that many of us practice. This is usually in the context of left vs right tapi tapi practice. That said, practice both the inside AND outside sweep strokes.
My goal is to be better than I was in the video below seven years ago. Let me tell you, defending with the stick in your left hand is really hard!
