This weekend, I attended the Annual Michigan Modern Arnis Camp in Southgate (outside of Detroit). I had a phenomenal time reconnecting with old friends and making new ones, and of course, the training was phenomenal.

I went into this camp wondering how my hip would hold up, given that I had neither trained nor taught since January. The reason is that I was sore the next day when I did my hip physiotherapy exercises or heavy-duty activities.

Surprisingly, I experienced virtually no pain during the camp. But right now, I still have a problem with weakness on the right side. The right side is still not as strong as the left side. Whenever I stepped to the right, my right side felt a bit unstable, and my posture wasn’t as sturdy as when I stepped to the left.

Two steps to the right
My right leg felt weak in this position during the Michigan Camp.

At this moment, my right hip feels a little bit sore from the camp. But it’s not too bad! This means I must continue doing the exercises that help strengthen my hip. This past weekend was a great way to see how well my hip is doing. I decided to skip two sessions just to be safe. I would say that I’m about 85% recovered.

Back to the camp. Masters Chuck, Ken and Will did a tremendous job teaching various techniques ranging from two sticks vs one, espada y daga, joint locks, tapi tapi, sinawali coordination drills, hand switches, and much more. As a friend said in a group text today, “There was some really cool shit shown this weekend, and honestly, even with notes, it’s a struggle to remember it all.” I agree with his sentiment.

I taught a couple of sessions along with Jason Gearheart, Andy Tong, Terry Hill, Ernie Phelps and Stan Archacki. All did a great job of reviewing the material taught throughout the camp. I had not taught either a class or a private lesson since January. So it felt good to get on the floor and teach. I felt rusty, though!

The next event is the annual ArnisFest.

This is always a great camp, except for the pandemic years, I’ve been to every one of them. Always a fantastic time!

I’ll be there as this looks like a “can’t miss” event!
