The Benefits of Solo Training
What are the benefits of solo training? Well, read on!
Martial arts training can improve physical fitness, mental focus, and self-defence skills. While many prefer to train with partners or in class, solo training offers numerous benefits. In this blog post, I’ll explore four reasons this training can boost your martial arts practice and help you achieve your goals.
(1) Flexibility in Training Schedule: One of the most significant benefits of independent training is its flexibility. You can train whenever and wherever you like without relying on a partner or class schedule. This allows you to fit your training around your busy life, making it easier to stay consistent and motivated. It is also good “homework” between classes and allows you to solidify newly learned techniques. Before my hip replacement surgery, I did a lot of training between private lessons and classes. Most often, I focused on advanced material. By the way, I have gotten to the point where I can resume solo training but will ramp it up slowly.
(2) Focus on Specific Techniques: Solo training allows you to focus on specific techniques or areas of your martial arts practice that you want to improve. Whether working on stick techniques or Modern Arnis anyos, solitary training gives you the time and space to work on these areas at your own pace.

(3) Develops Mental Discipline: Martial arts require mental discipline and physical training. Solo training allows you to develop your mental focus and concentration, as you must motivate yourself and maintain focus throughout your training sessions. Many have difficulty motivating themselves to engage in solo martial arts training. Start with 5 minutes at a time and gradually increase your training duration. This can help you build mental toughness and resilience that can be applied to all areas of your life.
(4) Increases Confidence: Solo training can help you build confidence in your abilities. As you practice and improve independently, you’ll feel more confident in your skills and abilities. This can translate to other areas of your life, giving you greater self-confidence and self-assurance.
Solo training can be a valuable addition to your martial arts practice. Whether you’re looking for more flexibility in your training schedule, want to focus on specific techniques, or develop your mental discipline and confidence, solo training can help you achieve your goals. By incorporating solo training into your practice, you can stay motivated and continue to improve your skills and abilities.
But……..
You knew there was a “but” coming, didn’t you? While solo training is a great tool, it can’t and will not replace live training in any way, shape or form. Training on your own can raise your skills to a certain level. But to achieve a higher level of proficiency, live training is a must. Mixing it up with live partners will expose the martial shortcomings that you otherwise would not have discovered on your own.

Solo training is an indispensable training method. But remember, it constitutes only a part of your martial arts journey! Combine the two, and you’re on the way!
