May 2009 Modern Arnis Technique of the Month
In the May 2009 Modern Arnis technique of the month, I demonstrate an old-style tapi tapi sequence. Techniques included in this sequence are the same side bait and a center lock.
The elements of this sequence include:
- Single sinawali;
- Sweep stroke;
- Tapi tapi block;
- Same side bait;
- Center lock;
- Finishing strike.
Typically, one training partner will practice this technique sequence several times, resetting in between each sequence. Then, the other partner will practice this as well.

I intend to produce technique of the month videos showcasing the breadth and depth of Modern Arnis.
Finally, some may ask, “What is old-style tapi tapi?” The answer is that this is the kind of tapi tapi that Professor Presas used to do for public demonstrations. Typically, he would use single sinawali as part of a technique sequence. Let me tell ya, his single sinawali was powerful and dynamic. He would often do sequences similar to the above video. As a result, his demonstrations were awe-inspiring and explosive. I’ve never seen anyone put together demonstrations like he did. Unbelievable.
In contrast, the “next generation tapi tapi” is more akin to the Balintawak folks’ practice. Lots of tapi tapi blocks and counters without single sinawali.
Enjoy this latest video. Thanks to Terence for being uke and editing this video and to Jason for the logo and the splash at the end of the video. Try this sequence!
