BrianBrief #9 (Aging to Perfection)
As we age, some of us realize we need to change our training methods to accommodate our aging bodies.
Not all realize this. Some do, but they’re so attached to their lifelong routine that they stick with it even if it does lasting damage to their bodies. For example, a couple of guys at the local gym lift together. I estimate they’re in their early to mid-50s. They still lift massive weights and have impressive strength (albeit with bad form). One thing that stands out to me is that, based on their physical movements, their bodies are clearly damaged. They are stiff and seem to struggle with mobility and agility. They walk with what appears to be an arthritic, stiff gait. Not good.
They show no signs of adjusting their routines to accommodate their bodies.
Hence, this clip of Arnold Schwarzenegger fascinates me. He has clearly set aside his ego to adjust his routine. For an all-time great bodybuilder to confront his ego and completely change his workout routine is quite impressive.
Are you attached to a lifelong routine? Or can you let go of old habits for your body’s sake? Can you set aside your ego to make much-needed changes? Obviously, this applies to martial arts training routines as well.
I’ve made quite a few changes, ranging from quitting the local gym in favour of a home workout routine that is far better for my body. I’ve incorporated a fair bit of advice from my gymnastics friend. I love what I’m doing right now.
How about you? Have you made wholesale changes to your routine to accommodate your aging body? Let me know!
