Video of the Week 24: Abanico Double Action off Block, Check, Counter
One of the mainstay drills of Modern Arnis is the block, check, counter drill. At the drill’s core is learning to respond to the 12 angles of attack. One variation of this drill involves the abanico double action. The basic sequence is as follows:
- The feeder feeds an angle of attack;
- The defender blocks with his stick;
- A split second later, the defender checks the attacker’s weapon or weapon hand;
- Finally, the defender counterattacks the feeder.
See the basic block, check, counter drill in the video below.
Double Zero Variation of the Block, Check, Counter Drill
One variation of the block, counter drill involves the double zero. While the video below was done in the context of the slap-off/pull-off drill, it can be applied to the block, check, and counter drill. When you practice this drill, be sure you are at a safe distance from your training partner. We don’t want any accidents, do we?
Abanico Double Action Variation
Besides the double zero, you can practice the Abanico Double Action. Before we go any further, let’s explain the “abanico double action.” The technique involves a fanning motion followed by a reverse vertical double zero. If done correctly, you can score three hits on your target. As you can see in the video below, one can execute the fanning motion with either two or three counts. The first hit is to the left side of the training partner’s head on every angle for consistency.
