Video of the Week 22: Angles of Attack with Abanico Double Action
Heeeyo! I’m going to keep this post short due to the holiday season!
Here’s another version of the 12 angles of attack—this time with the abanico double action. This is a fun way to mix up the practice of the 12 angles. Many of you have practiced the 12 angles with:
- Control
- Pull back
- Follow through
- Double Zero
- and now Abanico Double Action.
The word “abanico” is Spanish for “fanning.” As such, this is a fanning motion followed by a vertical double zero transiting back to your shoulder.
While many view this as a fancy twirling exercise, some nice combat applications of this technique exist. I’ll see if I can cover this in the next video. Do you want to see what the possible applications are? Let me know in the comments!
Speaking of Abanico Double Action, check out Professor Presas in the video below. I love this stunning display of his skill.
If you are not able to view the video, go here.
What’s stunning is that Professor Presas was left-handed. But he is demonstrating the abanico double action with his right hand, his non-dominant hand. If you ask me, his right-hand abanico double action was better than 99% of FMA players.
Anyway, if you watch closely, he utilizes the 2-count and 3-count versions I demonstrated in my video. You can adjust the settings to 25% speed and watch if needed.
Adapt that to the 12 angles of attack, and you will have a fun solo training drill to play with! Try it, and let me know what you think!

Love these variations on the 12 angles of attack drills. We did the double zeroes in class last week. It’s a bit of a brain bender. I found it easier if we started with the easier versions working up to the follow through, as the order is the same for that one. We’ll try the double abaniko on Saturday. Thanks for the training videos! They are a great reference tool!
