Video of the Week 12: Solo Sinawali Training
Every so often, a student or a client will ask me for solo training tips. I often advise them to try solo sinawali training, focusing on the angles of attack.
As I demonstrate in the video below, the key to solo sinawali training is paying attention to the angles of attack. In addition, executing the sinawali patterns slowly is also critical.
Solo sinawali training is highly beneficial for martial artists seeking to clean up their sinawali patterns. Practitioners can enhance their skill level by focusing on the angles of attack. Executing sinawali patterns slowly allows learners to build muscle memory and gradually improve their form. Be sure to start with standard or light sticks. Once your arms are conditioned, you can move to heavier sticks for solo training.
I cannot emphasize enough the proper way to execute any sinawali pattern. It starts with considering the angles of attack as part of sinawali. Otherwise, you will descend into sloppiness. A good example is the windshield wipers version of single sinawali. Seeing training partners miss each other’s sticks drives me bananas!
