# BrianBrief #4 (Foreseeable Crap)

## “Self defense” often denotes an immediate situation confronting you. A stranger accosts you in an elevator or at a parking lot. Or a loved one throws a violent temper tantrum to the point where you fear for your safety.

But what about life style choices that start out innocently enough but develops 
into a potential life threatening scenario?

For example, imagine a person racking up a gambling debt that approaches hundreds
of thousands of dollars? What if it’s the kind of debt that results in broken legs
or worse?

Is that person capable of realizing the long term consequences of their choices?
I don’t know. On the one hand, they may be too caught up in the moment to step outside
of themselves. On the other hand, they’re often suffused with fear but of their 
debt rather than their own safety.

What I’m getting at is that lifestyle choices often have a great impact on our personal
safety.

## Thoughts?

Side note: I typed this entirely on my iPhone and didn’t have access to my laptop
to clean it up. Hope it turned out okay!

My first thought off the cuff is LBGTQIA2S+ rights. Some say it’s a “lifestyle choice,”
and cheer whenever an atrocity is committed against them. I don’t know what the 
actual statistics are, but it’s highly likely that when one of those folks suffers
harm, it’s for no good reason. My second thought is a scenario where a woman is 
walking naked down the street at midnight. Maybe she’s drunk, maybe she does drugs,
it doesn’t matter – she could genuinely be in trouble. It seems too many men don’t
know that the proper response is to call 911, take off your own jacket or shirt 
and help her cover up, then stay with her until she’s safe. I’m hoping things are
different in Canada, but that’s reality in America. The words, “He/she was asking
for it,” are quite loaded.

I agree with everything you said. Every situation is different and your scenarios
SHOULD result in folks helping out the hypothetical victims. Unfortunately, we all
know about the infamous Kitty Genovese case; too many are unwilling to step in and
help. If I were in trouble, I sure hope that someone will come to my aid. I’d do
the same!

Yep! Every scenario is different, and I know I’d rather err on the side of mercy
or compassion.
