Making It Stick: Video Homework Assignments
One of the more interesting teaching ideas I’ve encountered is video homework assignments for students.
Specifically, the idea is to video private lessons and upload them to Google Drive for them to watch and analyze. The inspiration for this idea comes from Maija Soderholm, one of Sonny Umpad’s students.
According to Soderholm, Sonny insisted that his students study the videos and learn from their mistakes.
During my private lesson teaching career, some students video our sessions. Those who proactively video the sessions are in an extreme minority. It is somewhat surprising that, with today’s technology, few bother recording the sessions.
Only two of my current students are proactive about recording their private lessons. The first is Rosh, the owner of the gymnastics facility where I teach private lessons and one class per week. The other is a fantastic brother/sister duo who insist on recording new material.
Not surprisingly, those who record their lessons often have far better retention than those who don’t. So I am considering asking students if they would like their lessons recorded and uploaded to my Google Drive for them to review.
I recognize that not everyone will have the time to review their lessons thoroughly. One possibility is to record new material for their review.
So I have a poll for you!
If you were taking private lessons from me, which option would you rather have?
(A) A video of the entire lesson; or
(B) Video snippets of new material; or
(C) I’d rather take notes.
I’d love to have your feedback on this issue. Thank you so much for your attention and participation.
I’m a video fanatic. I’m currently reviewing a video from a recent seven-hour training session. My god, the amount I’ve learned from watching these videos is fantastic!
The more homework students do between classes or lessons, the faster they progress. It’s as simple as that. I’m just looking for ways to help my students.
