Video of the Week 31: Left-Hand Abanico Corto
“Abanico Corto” is Spanish for “short fan.” Many of my students love this wicked technique. I have posted several abanico corto videos on my YouTube channel. Among the left-hand material I’ve been working on is left-hand abanico corto.
In the video below, I demonstrate the left-hand abanico corto against Troy.
As many of you know, I’ve been dealing with a bad case of tendonitis in my right shoulder. Fortunately, rest and physical therapy is helping me to recover. That said, I am happy with my recovery, albeit it may take time to get to 100%.
Anyway, back to the left-hand abanico corto. The first key is moving your training partner’s weapon arm to create an opening for his noggin. And yes, I’m going after Troy’s head. Once you’ve cleared the arm, the head is wide open.
When do you use the left-hand abanico corto technique?
I would use it only under limited circumstances. The attacker’s angle of attack is the key to whether to use the abanico corto. For example, I would typically use abanico corto for a high-line attack such as angle 1 or 2.
Conversely, I would not use abanico corto against a waist-high attack. No way.
Anyway, try the left-hand abanico corto technique that I demonstrated on Troy. One quick tip: make sure that you chamber the stick underneath your right arm after the snake disarm.
