Video of the Week 30: Left-Hand Disarms
Practicing left-hand disarms in Filipino martial arts is crucial for self-defense and a highly enjoyable aspect of training. Here are some reasons why it’s fun!
I demonstrate the first four disarms in the video below. Let me tell you; it’s somewhat discombobulating to execute right-hand disarms with your left hand. However, a few repetitions, and you’re good to go!
1. Skill Development
Engaging in left-hand disarms helps practitioners and is an essential part of balanced training. My clients and I find it challenging to work the other side of our brains. I’ve joked to many that this is my “Alzheimer’s Prevention Program!” You’ve doubled your disarming repertoire once you’ve mastered the left-hand disarms!
2. Balance and Coordination
Training with the left hand encourages bilateral symmetry. This balance is key in martial arts, leading to an expanded self-defense toolbox. Is it true equality? Probably not. I can tell you that my left side is nowhere as good as my right side. But I sure as hell will keep working on my left side. Why not? The challenge is fun!

3. Realistic Scenarios
Filipino martial arts often incorporate realistic scenarios in their training. For example, practicing left-hand disarms can mimic real-life situations where you can’t use your right hand for some reason, whether due to injury or incapacitation.
4. Confidence Building
Mastering left-hand disarms can boost confidence. Knowing that you can defend yourself effectively using both hands gives practitioners a sense of empowerment, which makes training feel rewarding and enjoyable.
In conclusion, practicing left-hand disarms is not just about learning a technique; it should be an essential part of your overall training—all while being fun!
Shoulder Update
The right shoulder continues to improve. The tendonitis seems to be ebbing, thanks to rest and physiotherapy. I’ve tried some right-handed training with my clients, and the results are promising. That said, I still experience weakness and brief spikes of pain. Fortunately, the pain spikes are nothing like what they were in January, so that’s good news. I would estimate another two months until I fully recover. My next appointment with the shoulder doctor is on March 19th. Stay tuned!

Before you venture into the wild jungle of the Internet, might I persuade you to buy me a cup of coffee? ☕️
