Practicing With My Left Hand
I like to do a fair bit of solo training with both the right and left hands. Unfortunately, my right shoulder’s condition is such that I haven’t done much solo training with that side. In other words, I generally save my right shoulder for the daily private lessons. So, let’s talk about practicing with my left hand.

The purpose of solo training with the left hand is to improve your left-hand proficiency in partner training. Solo training is only a small part of the overall training regimen, but still quite important.
To be honest, my right shoulder is really messed up right now. It’s at the point where I am taking pain medication (Voltaren) at the end of most days.
On the other hand, this is an opportunity for me to focus on my left-hand technique. I deem myself somewhat proficient with my non-dominant left hand, but I know it could be better.
I believe that training with the non-dominant hand promotes more significant brain development by engaging the less-used hemisphere. Honestly, it feels like training my left hand has led to more arnis creativity. It’s hard to explain. It’s as though you see more offensive and counter possibilities.
There is also the practical aspect of training both sides of the body. After all, weightlifters don’t lift with one side of the body, do they? That would be utterly stupid and lead to imbalanced development of the body. So why not train with both hands?
The late Professor Remy A. Presas set the standard for Modern Arnis ambidexterity. He was a natural lefty who trained his right hand. But you could not tell which hand was his dominant hand. He was that great. I’ve posted the video below numerous times and am still in awe of his skill.

Anyway, my current right shoulder situation allows me to focus on my left hand for solo training. As I said earlier in the post, I’d like to save my right shoulder for private lessons. To be clear, my shoulder is functional for private lessons. But, as mentioned before, there is a fair bit of pain at the end of the day.
As some of you know, I have an appointment with a shoulder doctor on Friday, January 17th. I’m looking forward to getting some answers!
Before you venture into the wild jungle of the Internet, might I persuade you to buy me a cup of coffee? ☕️
