Video of the Week 19: Forward Pressure
Forward pressure is the ability to apply relentless pressure on an opponent. By using forward pressure, one can dominate an engagement with an opponent.
Forward pressure in Modern Arnis not only disrupts the opponent’s balance and timing but also enhances the practitioner’s ability to create openings for strikes, counters, and disarms. By consistently applying forward pressure, practitioners can force their opponents back on to their heels. Often they scramble desperately to maintain their defense.
Having been uke for Professor Chuck Gauss for many years, I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of forward pressure. The result is Professor Chuck’s forward pressure enables him to hit, bait and disarm me at will. I found it difficult to counter him when he has forced me into frantically defending myself.
Learning how to apply forward pressure isn’t too hard.
Start with the sweep stroke.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the left or right sweep stroke. Work on driving forward and splitting their centre line.
Drive with intent.
Drive like you want to take their head off.
All gas and no pedal.
Work on moving them or breaking their posture.
Got the idea?
The next thing to learn is what to do after you’ve successfully moved an opponent or broke their posture. Now we’re talking about hitting, baiting, disarming, takedowns and all the cool stuff you’ve learned during your martial arts journey.
But first, work on your forward pressure!
Before you venture into the wild jungle of the Internet, might I persuade you to fuel my caffeine addiction? Your kindness could be the very thing that keeps the keyboard clacking and the ideas flowing!
I need your help defraying the increasing expenses of the blog/website.
