Video of the Week 11: Modern Arnis Pulling
In Modern Arnis, pulling is crucial for breaking an opponent’s posture. This makes executing various strikes and manipulations easier. After pulling, practitioners can capitalize on their opponent’s broken posture, turning defensive movements into offensive counters. Hehehehe. Hence, pulling should be part of your toolbox.
Further, I should note that pulling works well with pushing (Tulak). Pushing (Tulak) and pulling complement each other quite well. Both can be used to off-balance an opponent, allowing you to counterstrike. Furthermore, pulling or pushing depends on your opponent’s size and energy. Please note that, in the context of Modern Arnis, both pushing and pulling are best done on the outside. What does that mean? If you guessed “footwork” you got it!
In martial arts like Modern Arnis, understanding the tactical application of movement—like when to push or pull—is crucial. By mastering pulling and pushing, you can enhance your ability to manage your opponent’s movements and predict their next steps. Remember, the effectiveness of pushing and pulling in a martial context isn’t just about physical strength; it’s also about timing, positioning, and the ability to read your opponent’s energy and intentions.
Pardon the pun, but you must maneuver into position to break your opponent’s posture. As you might guess, I use two-step footwork to get to the opponent’s outside line. As a result, I am in a position to either pull or push.
Back From Another Break
As hinted at in my previous post, I travelled to the UK with my wife to visit my sister-in-law for a week. Let me tell you, that was a much-needed break from my lifting routine after 9 weeks. I returned to it early this morning, and it felt good to be back in the gym. Before I went to the gym, I weighed myself this morning and was pleased to see that I hadn’t gained any weight. All that said, I have a long way to go before meeting my goal of “160 lbs and 60 push-ups by my 60th.” The most challenging thing is getting my weight down to 160. Stay tuned!
Anyway, while in the UK, I witnessed the Northern Lights. Talk about spectacular!
