Video of the Week 3: Martial Arts Footwork Rules

In the video below, I outline some martial arts footwork rules to guide beginners. As I stated in the previous post, footwork is the number one issue among my private clients. Proper footwork is essential for agility, mobility, and stability. In addition, it allows you to maneuver into an advantageous position to counterattack.

The video covers rules for moving to your right and left and proper footwork for moving forward and backward. These rules are easy to remember. Remember these martial arts footwork rules!
The first objective of the footwork rules is to avoid crossing your feet.
Crossing your feet in a self-defence situation can compromise your balance and stability, making you an easier target for your opponent. Proper footwork is critical for evading attacks and positioning yourself for a counterstrike during a confrontation. When you cross your feet, you lose the ability to move quickly. This critical lapse in footwork can grant an attacker an advantage, potentially allowing them to overpower you. Therefore, adhering to proper footwork rules is vital, as well as keeping your feet shoulder-width apart and moving to ensure you’re always in a good position to defend yourself.
Follow the footwork rules, and you won’t cross your feet!
