Sputtering to Life
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
My hopes of ramping up my private lesson teaching schedule from 0 to 60mph ran into reality last week.
In a way, this mirrors the North American and European economies. Both are sputtering back to life after a year of COVID-related lockdowns. Rebooting economies isn’t easy, especially after a year of unprecedented restrictions on economic activity. So it is with private lessons as well.
Two students cancelled due to work obligations. Another student encountered a medical issue. I had one weather-related cancellation (rain). Still, another student had a work-related emergency. So, it is what it is!
Still, I taught five private lessons for the week, and all went very well. One client was so pumped after his first one in 6 months that he now wants to train twice weekly. Awesome!
I was quite happy to see they all remembered the flow drills. This shows that my students have grasped the concepts from all 20 flow drills. They remembered them despite not training for six months means that we can accelerate their progress. Mixing and matching flow drills and counter concepts will be included in future lesson plans.
Also, I found time in the middle of the week to get my 2nd dose of the Moderna vaccine. One step closer to normalcy! This is exciting as I will eventually be able to teach maskless.
Due to last week, I’ve adjusted my expectations for this week downward. Not a big deal. But, it may take time for a full schedule to develop. As always, I welcome inquiries from those interested.
In the meantime, due to the unfolding seminar and camp schedule, I envy my Modern Arnis brothers and sisters in the States.
I wish that I could make this camp, being taught by Masters Chuck Gauss and Ken Smith:
Unfortunately, as of this writing, the US-Canada border restrictions will remain in place through July 21st. However, I will not be surprised if the closure is extended through August 21st, albeit with some modifications. We shall see. Canada has signalled that it will be cautious concerning the border.
Anyway, I look forward to training some of my students this week and furthering their progress!
