Fix It Friday: Which Way?
“Which way do you step against angle 5 or angle 12?” is a question I often hear from my students.

The left vs. right defence against the #5 thrust can be confusing for those doing this for the first time.
The fix is relatively easy. Knowing which way to go depends on which hand you’re holding the stick with.
Just step to the side you are holding the stick, and you’re on the right track!
Pretty simple, isn’t it? The same concept applies to the umbrella block against angle #12. Step to the right if you have the stick in your right hand. On the other hand, if the stick is in your left hand, step to the left and execute the umbrella block.
In other words, your tactics may change depending on which hand is holding the stick. Why? Your check hand will change as well. Therefore, you want to position yourself to put the check hand in the best possible position.
Now, you know which way to go!
