Fix It Friday: It’s A Reach!
In this “Fix It Friday” video, I address a common error when executing the pull-off.
If you are not able to view this video, click here.
This error involves reaching across the centerline to execute the pull off. Making this mistake leaves one vulnerable to a counter. In addition, this leaves you with a poor base from which to execute the pull-off.
As the video indicates, it’s best to simultaneously step to the right and bring your cane to your center line.
If done correctly, the pull-off is quite easy. The pull-off is a regular part of the Bamboo Spirit Flow Drills. See Flow Drill #1 for example.
This concept also applies to empty-hand self-defence techniques. For example, if you’re defending against a grab from the same side and want to execute a center lock, bring the grabbed hand to your center line to succeed.
Pay attention to proper structure and body positioning when practicing any martial art technique, and you’ll have a fighting chance!
