3rd Annual Toronto Modern Arnis Camp
This weekend, Bamboo Spirit Martial Arts Centre hosted the 3rd Annual Toronto Modern Arnis Camp in Pickering, Ontario. Darkhorse TKD was the site of the camp. This year’s camp was proof of this annual event’s growing size, with 30 attendees in total. As a result, it was a tremendous success. Attendees came from Detroit, Windsor, Toronto, Oshawa, and Ottawa.
As usual, Master Chuck Gauss and Master Ken Smith taught superbly, covering material ranging from double sticks, 2 vs. 1, single stick, joint locks, takedowns, knife work, and pressure points. Consequently, the material taught was quite diverse and represented the broadness and incredible depth of Modern Arnis.
As this camp occurred just 2 days before the 11th anniversary of Professor Presas’ passing, I am sure he would have been proud of the work Master Chuck and Master Ken are doing in spreading his art.
As part of the camp experience, Filipino cuisine was served on Saturday night, including Lechon, chicken adobo, spring rolls, steamed rice, pancit, and other dishes. It was fabulous!
For me personally, the training at the 3rd Annual Toronto Modern Arnis camp was great preparation for the upcoming trip to Germany. If you haven’t heard, Datu Dieter Knuttel and his DAV are hosting the “Best of the West” Camp in Dortmund, Germany. I am looking forward to this trip!
