# June 2009 Technique of the Month

Let’s discuss one technique in this monthly sequence: the [abanico corto](https://brianejohns.com/2021/03/15/blog-fantastic-abanico-corto-drill/).
When I executed the [abanico corto technique](https://brianejohns.com/2025/03/10/video-of-the-week-31-left-hand-abanico-corto/),
I had to move Terence’s arm out of the way. In doing so, I cleared the way to hit
his head.

Some may wonder if any part of this sequence can be countered. Of course! Theoretically,
any technique can be countered. However, that comes with time and practice. I believe
that it’s best to practice these sequences many times before you can understand 
[how to counter](https://brianejohns.com//2016/11/22/blog-counters-to-disarms/).

Next, I emphasized the left hand in this video. The late Professor Presas was a 
natural left-hander who trained both hands. He ardently believed that we should 
train both hands. And so we train both hands for flexibility. What if the right 
hand is injured? We then switch to the left hand!
